Ustica

Information & Tips about Ustica:

The island of Ustica lies right in the middle of the Southern part of Tyrrhenian Sea, almost completely isolated from the continent but renowned all over the world for its crystal-clear waters and the optimal climate, which is hot but not sultry. It is a small-sized, volcanic island characterized by the presence of several grottos and inlets distributed along the high, steep coast. All grottos can be visited by boat: among the most beautiful ones we can mention Grotta Azzurra, full of stalactites, Grotta dell'Accademia, Grotta dei Segreti, Grotta dell'Oro and Grotta delle Colonne.

In Punta Spalmatore, tourists can also find natural pools connected with the sea through a wonderful underwater passage; their waters are very clean and transparent.

In Ustica you can find a marine protected area, the marine wildlife reserve of Isola di Ustica, established in 1987; here many species of rare sea animals live undisturbed and the marine flora is really unique. There are corals and Peyssonnelia Squamaria, while the fauna is prevalently made up of lobsters, greater amberjacks, sea basses, barracudas, parrotfish and sponges: a genuine natural paradise for those who love diving.

At night, it can be very pleasant to have a walk down the alleys of Ustica and stop in one of its small squares to chat, or you can choose to have dinner in one of the several restaurants overlooking the sea where you can taste delicious fish dishes.
