Scarlino
Information & Tips about Scarlino:
The territory of Scarlino lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea and its coast – around 13 kilometers long – is really a rich and varied land. In the North, we can find fine, golden beaches and a sandy seafloor with some smooth pebbles that can be easily identified under the clear waters; the seafloor is characterized by a slight slope so that it can be safely frequented by families with younger children. The best beach in this area is the one called Polveriera.
There are also several beautiful coves following one another along the gulf of Follonica: inlets are very numerous and offer clear waters and marvelous seafloors. The sandy or gravel beaches are always clean and surrounded by a luxuriant vegetation, namely Mediterranean Maquis, where you can find shelter from the sun and coolness. Among the most important coves we can mention Cala Martina, Cala Fenica and, above all, Cala Violina. The latter is particularly striking and is named after the sound produced by the sand when trampled on with bare feet, a sound reminding the notes of a violin. Enclosed between two promontories, it is renowned for its transparent waters and its seafloors characterized by Posidonia Oceanica meadows; for two consecutive years – 2004 and 2005 – this beach has been awarded by Legambiente as one of the 11 most beautiful beaches in Italy. Furthermore, at Cala Violina you can also find picnic areas with tables and benches immersed in the rich vegetation.
It takes a few minutes drive from here to reach all the major towns in the Gulf of Follonica, such as, for example, Punta Ala; and you can also take a ferry boat to Isola d'Elba, where you can spent a whole day enjoying the sun and the sea.
