Porto Santo Stefano

Information & Tips about Porto Santo Stefano:

Porto Santo Stefano is one of the most famous and popular seaside resorts in the area of Monte Argentario; from the city centre, you can see the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Tourists can enjoy a really unique sight: entering the town you can immediately admire its unforgettable panorama. For this reason, the best way to visit it is on foot or by bike: so you can go along the coast, from time to time stopping to have a rest on the several benches that face the sea and catch sight of the suggestive spectacle offered by the Gulf of Argentario.

But Porto Santo Stefano is renowned above all for its beaches; among the most beautiful ones we can mention the Pozzarello and the Cantoniera, made up of pebbles and sand; and the Caletta provided with a bathing establishment, including bar and diving centre where you can admire seahorses with the help of a tour guide. Other beaches that are worthwhile visiting are the Moletto, on the seashore of which a water polo field is installed every Summer, and the Bagni di Domiziano, a little beach, free and without bathing services, that faces the ancient Roman house of Domizi Enobarbi. It is particularly good for children, given that its seafloor slopes down gently and the water is always shallow.

During the night, it is ideal to walk along the alleys and venture up and down the flight of steps in the city centre, perhaps after a stop in one of the several restaurants, pizzerias and bars overlooking the port; going up along the narrow alleys of the city centre you can get to the Spanish Fortress, built in the beginning of the XVII century to defend Porto Santo Stefano for it was often subject to pirate incursions. The panorama you can enjoy from these terraces is really suggestive especially during the nights when the sky is clear and the lights of the port can be easily distinguished.

Furthermore, from Porto Santo Stefano you can embark to Isola del Giglio and Giannutri, two places characterized by a great historical-naturalistic value.
