Porto Azzurro is located along the coast of Isola d'Elba in a deep inlet of the Gulf of Mola in the Channel of Piombino. Its name derives from the color of its clear waters, the destination of so many Italian and foreign tourists every Summer. One of the main resources of the town is represented by its enchanting beaches; among the most charming ones there is the beach of Barbarossa, enclosed between the promontory of Capo Bianco and that of Stendardo. The small bay, naturally formed, is provided with all bathing facilities and is characterized by golden beaches and a crystal clear sea. The peculiarity of this place is its breathtaking panorama offered to visitors: at the back of the bay the imposing Monte Castello and Cima di Monte rise, while from the beach you can catch sight of the peninsula of Calamita with its thick woods. Not very far from here there is the beach called Reale, that can be easily reached and is also equipped with all services, such as refreshment-rooms and bars.
Sports fans can find many amusing things to do in Porto Azzurro: besides the opportunity to take part into underwater activities and sailing and surfing lessons, there are a lot of traditional sport facilities where you can organize tennis or soccer games. There are also spaces devoted entirely to children, such as amusement parks and areas equipped with children's slide and swings. For those who love excursions we recommend to visit Forte Longone, a powerful fortress with a star-shaped plan that can be traced back to the XVII century and still today dominates the whole inlet.
In the night, you can enjoy the splendid square of Porto Azzurro that, overlooking the sea, has become the meeting place for local people as well as tourists, where you can take a walk in the stillness of the night admiring the numerous alleys full of bars, restaurants, pizzerias and craftsman's workshops.
