Populonia

Information & Tips about Populonia:

Populonia, a hamlet in the municipality of Piombino, is an old village with indescribable charm, perched on the top of a hill surrounded by the sea of the Gulf of Baratti. The town still preserves its Medieval wall and the defensive complex of the Medieval fortress, the Castle of Populonia, where you can admire a unique sight on the plane and the sea below.

Here, tourists can find beautiful beaches, made up of rocks and pebbles smoothed by the slow activity of waters; the shore is washed by an unpolluted, crystal clear sea. Close to the beach, a thick pinewood will allow you to relax yourself in the shade of its trees and to picnic in peace; from here, a pathway leads directly to the port.

Among the best beaches you can visit there is the Buca delle Fate at the foot of the promontory of Populonia; it is a free beach formed by pebbles and rocks: it does not offer any comfort but you can enjoy its clear waters that let you see a fantastic seafloor. Even the beach of Baratti is worth a visit, it is a long beach of black sand, the color is due to the presence of iron remnants coming from the neighboring Etruscan archaeological area.

All around you can see the ruins belonging to one of the most important and populated towns in Etruscan and Roman times; in fact, the whole area still preserves countless pieces of evidence from the past history of those populations. Going along the panoramic road connecting the small town to the Gulf of Baratti, it is possible to reach a zone which is the richest one in Etruscan ruins, above all necropolises (see, for example, the monumental necropolis of San Cerbone, built in the proximity of the sea, and that of the Grotte) and the ruins of ancient buildings devoted to iron working. In this archaeological park, history and archaeology are perfectly mixed with a landscape of unpolluted nature.
