Monreale

Information & Tips about Monreale:

Monreale lies at the foot of mount Caputo, on a natural terrace, created between the Conca d'Oro and the valley of Oreto, which is more than 300 meters above the sea level. This splendid town is in the province of Palermo and attracts thousands of Italian and foreign tourists every year.

Monreale is very renowned above all for its naturalistic and artistic beauties; among the former we can mention Giacalone, a mountain area which is very popular and crowded with people especially in summertime. In fact, temperatures are very pleasant here, it's not too cold nor too hot so that tourists can enjoy having long walks in the area to breath fresh air and to admire wonderful panoramas that are really unique. Some zones are characterized by a luxuriant vegetation, at times almost wild: there are woods on the mountain tops higher than 1.100 meters. Among the architectural beauties you can visit the cathedral of the town, which is a masterpiece of Norman architecture with its big, powerful fortified towers and bronze doors; next to it we can find the entrance to the cloister of an ancient Benedictine monastery.

Monreale is especially famous for its delicious food and wine specialties that you can taste in the typical restaurants of the city centre; we can mention, among others, almond paste cakes, cannoli (cylindrical pastries filled with ricotta and candied fruit), cassate (another typical Sicilian cake with ricotta) and local vintage wines, such as Rocche di Rao for example.
