Giannutri
Information & Tips about Giannutri:
Giannutri is a small Island with the shape of a half-moon included in the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago: its surface is just 2.3 square kilometers and is located about 15 kilometers South to Isola del Giglio. About twenty people live here, except for tourists during Summertime. The highest spot on the island of Giannutri is Poggio di Capel Rosso, which is about 90 meters above sea level: you can admire a unique panorama from here.
Its coast is rocky and characterized by numerous grottos and coves of an extraordinary beauty the most famous of which is Cala Grottoni. There are only two beaches: Cala Maestra to the North-East, where the ferry boats from Porto Santo Stefano or Porto Ercole dock, and Cala dello Spalmatoio, with its little wharf where small boats dock. There is a luxuriant vegetation on the island, characterized by Mediterranean Maquis and non-native species such as pine-trees and eucalyptuses. We really recommend to visit Giannutri if you love immersions: it is characterized by a crystal water sea, marvelous sea-floors with their vertical walls rich in sponges and corals. On the sea-floor there are also some wrecks of old, Roman merchant ships. Furthermore, the island has a considerable historical-artistic interest: there are the ruins of the Villa Agrippina, a Roman villa of the II century AD belonging to the family of Domini Enobarbi, who were wealthy merchants. The building, that is very imposing, still preserves a part of its original marble floor with black and white mosaics, while frescoes have been completely destroyed.
